EcoHomes was developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to provide an authoritative sustainability rating for new, converted or renovated residential dwellings.

Eco Homes

In April 2007, the Code for Sustainable Homes replaced Ecohomes for the assessment of new housing in England. However EcoHomes 2006 will continue to be used for refurbished housing in England and for all housing in Scotland and Wales.

EcoHomes assesses a development on a whole site basis against eight categories to provide an overall site rating; all elements are optional to enables flexibility within sustainable design.

The categories are as follows:

  • Energy
  • Transport
  • Pollution
  • Materials
  • Water
  • Ecology
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Management

The environmental performance is then rated as Pass, Good, Very Good or Excellent.
EcoHomes assessments can be carried out in two phases: the design stage and post construction stage.

Energy Council have successfully carried out over 500+ EcoHomes assessments since its introduction. We have a number of qualified personnel able to provide a full guidance and assessment service.
