Energy Council can offer daylighting calculations for planning requirements, Code for Sustainable Homes assessments and reports for the Contractor.

Daylighting Calculations

The report will include calculations for the daylight factor and view of the sky. Consideration of these factors will achieve credits in the Daylighting section of the CSH.

Daylighting is the process of designing and building to maximise the benefits of natural light. Issues such as location of windows, transparancy and reflective surfaces within the design of the building are taken into consideration.

Recommendations are provided which reduces the reliance on electric lighting and encourages passive solar design.

A daylighting calculation involves taking account of the surface areas of a room, the glazed areas, the reflectance factor , the reflectance of room surfaces and the glass transmittance factor. The result of the calculation gives the average Daylight Factor (df) for the room. The df is required to reach different levels for different rooms as provided within CIBSE lighting guides.

A View of the Sky calculation assesses the point at which a room no longer receives direct skylight. It is recommended that view of the sky and daylighting calculations are carried out at the Planning Stage of a development so any changes can be made.
